The capital of the Aosta Valleyin fact, it is connected with a cable car with the locality of Pila. It only takes 18 minutes – and no effort – and you are directly on the slopes. The car is left at the free car park from where the lift starts, which is no more than five minutes on foot from Chanoux square. The same where Schiavone takes coffee in the famous TV series.
Skiing in Pila: like in a Schiavone romando
At the top, then, as if that weren’t enough, there is also the hut made celebrated in the story “Black runway“. In the fiction it is the background to a grim murder: in reality, those who come to ski in Pila much more quietly stop to feast on polenta, mocetta and fontina descending along the Nouva slope.
One of 29 slopes (4 black, 21 red, 4 blue) that range between 1,540 and 2,750 meters of altitude allowing you to always find well-groomed snow (for the rest, of course, the artificial snow systems will take care of it).
In short, a perfect station for those who want to combine the possibility of a walk among the Roman ruins, elegant shops and the serpentines on the white “walls”. But you know, the world of snow is not only made up of champions among the poles: so for some time the station has been equipped to attract even those – and there are more and more – who love “alternative” skiing: the right place is Areaffethe first snow park in the Aosta Valley and among the best in the Northwest designed with the fun and adrenaline rush of snowboarder and freestyle-skier.
Don’t you ski and don’t jump? No problem, do as Schiavone and look for your style anyway. For those who still want to put their feet in the snow (but without the Clarks, of course) there are itineraries with snowshoes that allow you to discover even the most remote corners of the Pila basin among extraordinary panoramas – the peaks of the Vallée are all around – following in the footsteps of chamois, squirrels and foxes also accompanied by nature guides.
A stone’s throw from Aosta and its beauties
But we said it: the city is close. This is why there are also events that would be difficult to experience elsewhere, among the peaks. The first is that linked to Sant’Orso Fair which takes place from the year 1000 in Aosta in January. Just take advantage of the cable car to go from the slopes to the heart of the city where one takes place great popular festival which is also the time to get to know all the fruits of the creativity of the mountain people.
